(How to connect to the ITTM chat server.)
This is pretty easy, I'll walk you through how to connect to our XMPP encrypted chat server.
There are some notes at the end of this post. Please read them before joining.
First you need to download and install pidgin. I'm sure you can install an application on your own so I'll leave you to that and then continue after you have it installed.
All done? Great! Let's get started.
You should be looking at the buddylist.
Now you need to add an account. So click the "Accounts" menu item. It will open up this window.
Click the lower left "Add" button. It will open up the add an account window.
This is the important window.
All you need to do is in this basic tab.
The type of server we run is an XMPP server so in the "Protocol" section you need to choose XMPP from the drop down list.
In the username section, enter in duh... your username that you want to use. (This will also be your displayed name in the chatroom)
The "Domain" section needs to be "italktomachines.com" NO HTTP:// just like it's shown.
Resource can be left blank.
In the "Password" field, you guessed it, enter in your own password. I'd recommend something long, and strong, cause I'm down to get the friction..., oh sorry got sidetracked... Please remember this however if you do ever loose it or need it changed, just let me know and I can help you take care of that too.
I'd also recommend you check the box "Remember Password" so you don't have to worry about forgetting it, and I don't have to go through the hastle of changing it for you. Also please note your passwords ARE stored encrypted as well, so I can't tell you what your password is, I can just change it for you.
*Blue Box* Now if you have more then one computer, and this is the first time you are creating an account on this server you NEED to check the box titled "Create this new account on the server" to well, create this account on my server! However! If you have already created an account and are installing pidgin on a second computer, leave this UNCHECKED!
After you have filled in the blanks, click the "Add" button. The account will be created. Also you'll probably get a warning that this server is using a self signed security certificate,
THIS IS EXPECTED!
Allow or Accept the certificate. After all that, you should be connected to the chat server automaticlly.
Congrats! That's the hard part and you only have to do it once! w00t! Now exit out to just the Buddylist again.
Click the "Buddies" menu item and go down to "Join a chat".
The main chat room is simply named, "Chat" so if you just want to join our main chatroom, just type in "chat" in the room section and click "join". You will be whisked away to our chatroom post haste!
You can also create your own room/rooms as well as we have a few other chatrooms on our server that your able to join as well. If you would like to view this list, click the button shown in the blue box titled "Room List", accept the defaults and click search to view the available rooms.
So you now have an account on this chat server, don't be shy, let me know what you think!
A few things about my chat server.
1. Unless specified, all chat rooms are logged and the data saved for a brief time, allowing you to search the logs for missed information. KEEP THIS IN MIND! Also it's handy to leave a message for the room even if no one's currently online. It will still be shown as people join. (if you don't like the idea of this, check out pidgin otr on google and then as me how to use it to stay more private. Also note, BOTH parties need to be running with pidgin otr to make this work.)
2. There are private rooms that are password protected. And some that don't show up on the room list. You'll need to talk to the room owner to gain entrance, I do not control those passwords, and will not disclose the names of any private rooms!
3. Private messaging between two users (double click a user or chat him directly via your buddylist) is NOT logged, ever. And yes it too is encrypted from end to end.
4. Language is not censored, if vulgar or graphic language offends, either create your own room and enforce your rules yourself, or deal with it. I'm not your mom.
5. We try to have fun in here, if I kick you from the server, unless you know you deserved it, don't get mad, I'm just having fun playing god. :)
Look forward to seeing you in there!
